Mercerwood is a large neighborhood on the North End, sitting on the hillside and was actually Mercer Island’s first development constructed after World War II. Because of this, there are several mid-century homes, contemporary style estates, and craftsman style architecture and all homes enjoy an east facing view.

The boundaries of Mercerwood stretch from SE. 40th St. to E. Mercer Way ending at the Mercerwood Shore Club. This is the neighborhood’s most notable businesses. The Mercerwood shore club is a popular Beach club with a fitness center, swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, and more. The club also has over 500 feet of waterfront property including a large picnic area, barbecues, fire pits, beach playgrounds, and a swimming area. There’s even a boat launch with 36 slips.

Most of the homes in Mercerwood date back to the 1950s and early 1960s. The Mercer Island high school, many of the governing buildings, the library, and the Stroum Jewish community center are all located in Mercerwood. As well as the Shore Club, this Jewish community center also offers a fitness area, racquetball courts, a gym, swimming pool, children’s library, meeting rooms and classrooms, and an indoor running track.

Access and Commutes

Mercerwood is very close to Interstate 90 making commuting to and from Seattle or the side very convenient. Residents can easily hop on E. Mercer Way or Gallagher Hill Road for the on and off ramp to I 90. Mercerwood Drive also offers easy access along SE. 40th St. to downtown or South along E. Mercer Way to access the southern end of the island.

Homes

Homes in the Mercerwood neighborhood start at about $1 million and go up to about $6 million depending on location, condition, age, and view. Homes along E. Mercer Way and several of the smaller roads and neighborhoods offer homes with beautiful views of Lake Washington and the east side. Some homes also have views of Mount Rainier. Again, these homes were built in the 1950s to the 1970s so you’re likely to see generally two-story homes with four or five bedrooms, 3 to 4 bathrooms, and in sizes from about 1900 ft.² to 3500 ft.². Most of these homes are also located on extremely wooded lots, so mature landscaping is often the draw for homebuyers.

Schools

Residents of Mercerwood are part of the Mercer Island school district and are served by the West Mercer Elementary school, the Islander middle school, and the Mercer Island high school. The middle school is really the only one that’s a little bit of a drive.
