The small community of Appleton actually has a unique history. It traces its roots back to Charles Olds and his family who established a homestead here in 1885. The family cleared 12 acres of land and filled with apple trees, some of which remain to this day along with the orchards nickname, Appleton.
The neighborhood boasts about 20 properties developed from the 1950s to the 1980s. The oldest is a 1914 beach house with shared waterfront property.
Schools
Residents attend the Mercer Island public school district and are served by the Island Park elementary school, the Islander middle school, and the Mercer Island high school. The elementary school is about a half a mile away and the middle school and high school are between one and one and a half miles from Appleton.

Shops, restaurants, and the entrance to I 90 is between 7 and 10 minutes north or about 3 to 3 1/2 miles.
